This year, as you’ve probably heard, billions of cicadas will soon emerge all along the Eastern seaboard after living 17 years underground. By emerging en masse—some say there may be as many as 1 million cicadas per acre—these so-called Brood II cicadas are more likely to overwhelm predators, including other insects, birds, small mammals, turtles, and frogs, thus helping to ensure species survival.

This is Rose Valland, one of the heroes of Nazi-Occupied France. An employee of the Louvre, she kept records of the art stolen by Nazi officers- what was taken, from where, and by who. She was instrumental in the postwar return of countless stolen pieces, and one of the most decorated women in French history.

Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity

An Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

This exhibit is running until May 27, 2013. If you’re at all a fan of impressionist paintings, period costumes or just fashion in general, this is something you will be interested in.

This show explores the relationship between fashion and art during the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s. It is not just canvases on the walls; the costumes that are depicted in the paintings are on display as well (if not the exact garment, then something very similar). Features work by numerous artists including Monet, Renoir, Seurat, Cassatt and many more.

Pay No Attention to the Spies on the 23rd Floor

The radio room on the top floor of the Hotel Viru in Tallinn, Estonia hasn’t been touched since the last KGB agent to leave turned out the lights in 1991. A sign stenciled on the door outside reads “Zdes’ Nichevo Nyet”: There Is Nothing Here.

The floor inside is yellowed linoleum. A cheap orange typewriter still has a sheet of paper in it; sheets filled with typed notes spill off the table and onto the floor. The dial of a light-blue telephone on the particleboard desk has been smashed. There’s a discarded gas mask on the desk and an olive-green cot in the corner. The ashtray is full of cigarette butts, stubbed out by nervous fingers more than 20 years ago. Mysterious schematics labeled in Cyrillic hang on the wall, next to steel racks of ruined radio equipment.

The Hotel Viru’s unmarked top floor, just above the restaurant, belonged to the Soviet secret police. At the height of the Cold War, this room was manned by KGB agents busy listening in on hotel guests. The air here is thick with untold stories. Today, an unlikely museum to Estonia’s Soviet past tries to tell some of them. Continue reading at Smithsonian.com.
